Friday Funny- Amazing Architecture

This week I discovered on Digg.com a story about a family that built their own ‘hobbit hole’ with assorted hand tools. Then I found another article about amazing things created/designed in secret.  Therefore I’m making that our theme…

First, here is the original article about the family in Wales about their Eco-friendly home.  Note: It is pretty amazing and pretty much too Eco-friendly for me; specifically their use of a ‘compost toilet.’

Low Impact Woodland Home…

To begin I would encourage you to visit the link above because they discuss the reason why this was best for their family and how they built the home.  I’m just going to highlight the plans/photos for your appreciation.

You are looking at pictures of a house I built for our family in Wales. It was built by myself and my father in law with help from passers-by and visiting friends. 4 months after starting we were moved in and cosy. I estimate 1000-1500 man hours and £3000 put in to this point. Not really so much in house buying terms (roughly £60/sq m excluding labor).

Their website features other homes that are low-impact housing, click here to see more great Eco-friendly homes.

From Cracked.com a list of incredible designs and construction projects that went under the cover of secrecy; some due to private habits, others for the sake of national security such as the Boeing plant in Washington State that was covered by a Hollywood set designer to hide the airplane factory from any air surveillance by the Japanese during WWII.

That was pretty impressive by itself, but then the article goes on to describe The Temples of Damanhur.

One night in August of 1978, Falco and some like-minded companions started digging into the mountainside. Over the next 14 years, they worked in four-hour shifts, using simple hand tools and sketches Falco had made of his vision. Rumors began circulating that something was going on under the house, and in 1992, police showed up at Falco’s front door. When he wouldn’t let them in, they threatened to use dynamite. Realizing that the cops were either serious or villains from a Disney movie, Falco and his fellow “Damanhurians” complied, leading the police through their secret door and into the mountain.

Besides what you can find on Cracked.com you can also go direct to the website here and see a prolific amount of images. I TOTALLY recommend the virtual tour on that website, it’s friggin’ awesome and I’m willing to lay odds that watching it while intoxicated takes it to a whole other level.

More from Cracked.com;

We can’t even put together our new nightstand from IKEA without bellowing phrases so vile that our neighbors spontaneously burst into tears, and these people single-handedly built a whole new Wonder of the World. With hand tools.

While Falco is clearly inspired by something higher, the truly baffling part of this is that he did all this with friends working for free, out of the kindness of their own hearts, to make a grown-up’s childhood vision a reality. We’re all for lending a helping hand to our friends, but we’re pretty sure we would have thrown down our tools after the first four-hour shift.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's ass looks huge from any angle out of them all?

I’ll sprinkle some weird news about just to lighten it up…

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (Reuters) – There’s nothing illegal about a foot fetish but police in Conway, Arkansas, are looking for a toe-sucking man they said has crossed the line into assault.

Police have received two complaints in the past week about a man who seems desperate to suck women’s toes — whether they want him to or not.

“We want him off the streets,” said Conway police spokeswoman LaTresha Woodruff.

Last Saturday, Ruth Harris, 83, told police she was sitting in a chair in front of her apartment when a man approached and said he liked her feet. According to a police report, the man took off one of her shoes and began sucking on her toe.

“The man then asked if he could kiss her and she had told him no and told him he was crazy,” the report stated.

The man left quickly after people walked into the apartment complex’s courtyard.

MIAMI (Reuters) – A Brazilian man who was caught at Miami airport trying to smuggle seven baby pythons and three baby tortoises concealed in his underwear and pockets was fined $400 by a U.S. judge on Wednesday.

Simon Turola Borges, 30, who had been detained since August 25, pled guilty to smuggling and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Patricia A. Seitz to time served, two years of supervised release, and a $400 fine. He was ordered to be deported.

Prosecutors said Borges initially denied having anything hidden in his pants when Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at the airport pulled him aside for a further search after he went through a body scanner while preparing to board a flight to Brazil last month.

“Subsequently, he was asked to empty his cargo pants pockets, and he removed two hatchling pythons tightly wrapped in nylon pantyhose,” prosecutors said in a statement.

DENVER (Reuters) – A pet cat that went missing in Colorado five years ago was found wandering in Manhattan, and will soon be sent on a plane to reunite with its former owners, an animal pound spokesman said on Wednesday.

Willow, the traveling feline.

Workers at the pet shelter traced Willow the cat back to a family in Colorado, thanks to a microchip embedded in the animal’s neck that they checked with a scanner, said Richard Gentles, spokesman for Animal Care & Control of New York City.

A concerned citizen found the brown, black and white cat recently prowling the streets on the East Side of Manhattan, and the animal was taken to the shelter.

Animal care workers do not know who was taking care of the cat, but Gentles said one thing is certain — the pet did not travel half-way across the country on its own.
